Debiasing the Reasoner
In the second post, I argued that cognitive bias distorts information before logic even touches it — and that intelligence makes the problem worse, not better. In the previous post, I examined solutions to the information supply chain. But even a perfect supply chain gets filtered through a compromised processor.
This post examines the processor. What actually works to reduce cognitive bias in human reasoning?
The honest answer is: less than we'd like. Individual debiasing produces real but modest effects. No technique eliminates bias. No amount of training makes you immune. But "modest" is not "zero" — and the research identifies specific practices that measurably improve judgment. The key is knowing what works, what doesn't, and where the limits are.
What Doesn't Work
Intelligence. Dan Kahan's research at Yale on identity-protective cognition is the most important finding people don't want to hear: higher scientific literacy and numeracy made political polarization worse, not better. People with stronger analytical skills did not converge on the evidence. They used those skills to construct more sophisticated defenses of their group's position. IQ is not a defense against bad judgment. It is, in many cases, the weapon that bad judgment uses to defend itself.
Awareness. Knowing about confirmation bias does not stop it. This is the meta-cognitive trap: people who can name their biases often believe that naming them is sufficient to neutralize them. It isn't. Naming the bias is like naming the disease — it is a necessary precondition for treatment, but it is not itself the treatment. Confirmation bias does not politely step aside because you know it exists. It operates below the threshold of conscious awareness, in the space between perception and deliberation that Daniel Kahneman called System 1.
Financial incentives. Camerer and Hogarth (1999) reviewed the evidence on whether raising the stakes improves judgment. The findings were discouraging: there is little evidence that people reason more accurately when the financial consequences are higher. Motivated reasoning does not yield to money. It yields, when it yields at all, to specific cognitive interventions.
What Works: The Techniques
"Consider the Opposite"
The simplest evidence-backed debiasing technique is also one of the oldest. Lord, Lepper, and Preston (1984) demonstrated that asking people to consider reasons why their initial judgment might be wrong — to actively generate counterarguments — significantly reduced bias.
Mussweiler, Strack, and Pfeiffer (2000) showed the technique reduced anchoring bias — the tendency to be disproportionately influenced by the first piece of information encountered. The mechanism is straightforward: the technique forces you to generate information that your bias would otherwise suppress. It does not eliminate the bias. It introduces a counterweight.
There is a nuance worth noting. Sanna, Schwarz, and Stocker (2002) found that the debiasing effect has a sweet spot. Generating two counterarguments helps. Generating ten backfires — because the difficulty of producing that many counterarguments is itself interpreted as evidence that counterarguments are weak (a fluency heuristic). The lesson: the technique works best when it is a deliberate, bounded exercise, not an exhaustive one.
Pre-Decisional Accountability
Jennifer Lerner and Philip Tetlock (1999, Psychological Bulletin) published the landmark review on accountability and judgment. Their central finding: pre-decisional accountability to an unknown audience is the condition most likely to produce less biased reasoning.
The mechanism is what they call "preemptive self-criticism." When people know, before they see the evidence, that they will have to justify their reasoning to an audience whose views they don't know, they think more carefully. They consider multiple perspectives. They hold their initial impressions more lightly. They engage in what Tetlock calls "integratively complex" thinking — reasoning that acknowledges trade-offs and competing considerations rather than collapsing into a single narrative.
Tetlock (1983) demonstrated the effect experimentally: the primacy effect — the tendency to be disproportionately influenced by early information — disappeared among subjects who learned they would justify their judgments before seeing the evidence. Among those informed only afterward, the bias persisted.
The caveat is important: accountability can backfire. It sometimes increases defensiveness, escalation of commitment to sunk costs, and ambiguity aversion. The conditions matter. Accountability to an audience with known views produces conformity, not better reasoning. Accountability after the judgment is formed produces rationalization, not reassessment. The structure of accountability determines whether it debiases or entrenches.
Inoculation and Prebunking
Covered in detail in the previous post, but worth restating here as a demand-side intervention. Sander van der Linden's inoculation approach (2017, Global Challenges; Roozenbeek et al., 2022, Science Advances) teaches people to recognize manipulation techniques rather than correcting specific false claims. This is a cognitive intervention — it changes how the reasoner processes information, not what information reaches them.
The effects are modest (5–10 percentage points improvement in manipulation detection) but durable (at least three months per Maertens et al., 2021) and cross-partisan. The approach is scalable — 90-second videos delivered as YouTube pre-roll ads reached over a million viewers in the Google/Jigsaw deployment.
Debiasing Training Games
Carey Morewedge and colleagues (2015, Policy Insights from the Behavioral and Brain Sciences) demonstrated that a single training session — either playing a serious game called Missing: The Pursuit of Terry Hughes or watching an instructional video — produced medium to large debiasing effects. The game produced 32% or greater bias reduction immediately; the video produced 19% or greater. Critically, the effects persisted at least two months and transferred across domains — meaning participants showed reduced bias on problems in formats and contexts different from those in the training.
Sellier, Scopelliti, and Morewedge (2019, Psychological Science) extended this to a real-world context: trained graduate students were 19% less likely to choose the inferior, confirmation-biased solution in a business case modeled on the Challenger disaster decision.
This is significant because transfer is rare in debiasing research. Most interventions improve performance on the specific task trained but fail to generalize. The Morewedge findings suggest that training on the structure of bias — understanding the mechanism, not just the outcome — can produce transferable improvements.
The Superforecaster Model
If there is a single body of evidence that demonstrates what effective debiasing looks like in practice, it is Philip Tetlock's work on superforecasting.
The Good Judgment Project (GJP), funded by the Intelligence Advanced Research Projects Activity (IARPA), recruited thousands of volunteer forecasters to predict geopolitical events — elections, conflicts, economic shifts. A small subset — the "superforecasters" — consistently outperformed not just the crowd but intelligence analysts with access to classified information (Tetlock & Gardner, 2015, Superforecasting: The Art and Science of Prediction).
What made them better? Not IQ. Not education. Not domain expertise. Superforecasters shared a set of cognitive habits:

Active open-mindedness. They continuously questioned their own views and actively sought disconfirming evidence. Where most people treat beliefs as possessions to be defended, superforecasters treated them as hypotheses to be tested.

Granular probabilistic thinking. They expressed uncertainty in precise numerical probabilities rather than vague verbal categories. Instead of "likely" or "unlikely," they operated in terms of 65% or 23%. This discipline forced them to be specific about how confident they actually were — and to notice when their confidence changed.

Frequent belief updating. When new evidence arrived, superforecasters adjusted their estimates aggressively. Ordinary forecasters anchor on their initial judgment and adjust insufficiently. Superforecasters treated every new piece of information as a reason to recalibrate.

The "dragonfly eye." Tetlock's metaphor for synthesizing multiple perspectives simultaneously — seeing the same problem through many lenses rather than committing to a single framework.

Intellectual humility. An eagerness to acknowledge misfires and examine why they happened. Superforecasters did not experience being wrong as a threat to their identity. They experienced it as data.
Tetlock's earlier work, Expert Political Judgment (2005, Princeton University Press), had already established the foundational distinction: experts who were "foxes" — drawing on many frameworks, tolerating ambiguity, comfortable with uncertainty — significantly outperformed "hedgehogs" — those committed to a single grand theory that explained everything. The superforecasters were the foxes, trained and organized.
The training was not elaborate. A roughly 40-minute session covering common biases, basic probabilistic reasoning, and introductory Bayesian updating produced measurable improvement. Some superforecasters practiced these corrections so extensively that the techniques became automatic — effectively incorporated into System 1 processing. The slow, deliberate work of System 2 became fast intuition through practice.
This is the most hopeful finding in the entire debiasing literature: the habits that reduce bias can be learned, practiced, and eventually internalized. They do not require extraordinary intelligence. They require a specific orientation toward one's own beliefs — an orientation of curiosity rather than defense.
Intellectual Humility: The Trait That Matters Most
Mark Leary and colleagues at Duke (2017, Personality and Social Psychology Bulletin) developed a scale for measuring intellectual humility — defined as "the degree to which people recognize that their beliefs might be wrong." Across four studies, they found that intellectual humility was associated with openness, curiosity, tolerance of ambiguity, and low dogmatism. People high in intellectual humility judged others less based on their opinions and were less certain that their own beliefs were correct.
Tenelle Porter and colleagues (2021) synthesized findings across 16 measurement scales and identified two key dimensions of intellectual humility: an intrapersonal dimension (recognition of one's own fallibility) and an interpersonal dimension (engaging respectfully with perspectives that differ from one's own). Both matter, but they are distinct — you can be privately uncertain while being publicly dismissive, or vice versa.
The bias-reduction findings are striking. People higher in intellectual humility are better at differentiating weak arguments from strong ones. They are more likely to investigate suspect information — doing more digging after encountering dubious claims rather than accepting or rejecting them reflexively. Intellectual humility is associated with less affective political polarization and less biased information processing. It provides a measurable antidote to the Dunning-Kruger effect: overestimation of one's abilities is significantly attenuated among those who are more intellectually humble.
Can intellectual humility be cultivated? The evidence says yes, modestly. People assigned to read an article about growth mindsets — the idea that abilities are developed through effort rather than fixed at birth — showed higher intellectual humility and more respect toward those who disagreed with them. Randomized controlled trials have shown small-to-medium increases in intellectual humility from educational programs targeting active listening and conflict management.
Porter and colleagues (2024) found that teachers who publicly expressed intellectual humility — admitting confusion, acknowledging ignorance, owning mistakes — boosted their students' motivation and engagement, with the largest effects for young women. The implication: intellectual humility is not just personally beneficial. It is socially contagious.
This connects directly to the identity trap described in the second post. Cognitive behavioral therapy has long practiced the separation of belief from identity — "I believe X" is a proposition that can be updated; "I am an X-believer" is an identity that must be defended. Intellectual humility is the disposition that makes this separation possible. It is not a technique applied in the moment. It is a stance toward your own mind — a willingness to hold your beliefs at arm's length and examine them as objects rather than defending them as extensions of yourself.
Decision Hygiene: Fixing the System, Not the Person
Daniel Kahneman, Olivier Sibony, and Cass Sunstein (2021, Noise: A Flaw in Human Judgment, Little, Brown Spark) shifted the conversation from individual bias to systemic noise — the unwanted variability in judgments that should be identical.
Their examples are sobering. At an insurance company, underwriters were asked to independently set premiums for the same five fictive customers. The median variation was 55% — five times what executives expected. Two psychiatrists independently diagnosing the same 426 patients agreed on the diagnosis only 50% of the time. These are not differences in information or values. They are noise — random variability in professional judgment that produces inconsistent, unfair, and often incorrect outcomes.
The authors propose six "decision hygiene" principles: subdivide complex judgments into independent sub-assessments; use relative rather than absolute judgments; avoid ambiguous rating scales; aggregate independent forecasts before discussion; delay intuitive holistic judgment until after analytical components are complete; and use the Mediating Assessments Protocol (MAP) for structured group decisions.
The critical insight is mathematical: reducing noise yields the same reduction in total error as an equally large reduction in bias. And in many professional contexts, noise constitutes the larger share of total error. This means that structural interventions targeting consistency — protocols, checklists, independent assessments aggregated statistically — may improve judgment more than interventions targeting individual bias.
This reframes the problem. The question is not just "How do I debias myself?" but "How do I build decision systems that are less sensitive to the biases and noise of any individual participant?" The answer is structural — and it connects directly to the next post.
Mindfulness: Small but Real
Hafenbrack, Kinias, and Barsade (2014, Psychological Science) found across four studies that mindfulness practice — including as little as eight minutes of focused breathing — reduced the sunk-cost bias. The mechanism: mindfulness reduced temporal focus on past and future, which reduced negative affect, which facilitated the ability to let go of prior investments that were no longer rational.
A meta-analysis of 111 randomized controlled trials (2024) found significant effects of mindfulness-based interventions on executive function (g = 0.15) and working memory (g = 0.23) — small effects, but consistent across a large number of studies.
I include this not because mindfulness is a primary debiasing tool but because it illustrates an important principle: anything that increases the gap between stimulus and response — that creates a pause where automatic processing would otherwise proceed unchecked — has debiasing potential. Mindfulness does this. The accuracy prompt discussed in the previous post does this. The "consider the opposite" technique does this. They all work on the same principle: slowing down System 1 long enough for System 2 to engage.
The Honest Limits
Every intervention discussed in this post produces real effects. None produces large effects. The meta-analyses are consistent: media literacy interventions show positive but modest results (Jeong, Cho & Hwang, 2012). Debiasing training shows medium effects that decay over time (Morewedge et al., 2015). Prebunking shows 5–10 percentage point improvements (Roozenbeek et al., 2022). Intellectual humility interventions show small-to-medium effects.
Richard Larrick (2004, in the Blackwell Handbook of Judgment and Decision Making) posed the central unanswered question of the debiasing field: "How do you get people to adopt better decision strategies?" The techniques exist. The problem is uptake. The people who most need debiasing are the least likely to seek it — because recognizing the need for debiasing requires the intellectual humility that the most biased people lack.
This is the fundamental limit of demand-side interventions. They improve individual reasoning on the margin. They do not transform it. They help the willing. They cannot reach the resistant. And the resistant are not a small minority — they are the human default. We are all, by factory settings, biased reasoners who believe we are objective.
The most powerful debiasing, the research suggests, is not a technique you apply to yourself. It is a structure that applies debiasing to you — whether you seek it or not. Science does this. Deliberative assemblies do this. Adversarial collaboration does this. Prediction markets do this.
